Social media figure Maverick Aoko, known for her explosive posts, has gone missing raising concerns about her safety at a time when cases of abduction are on the rise.
Aoko, who is quite active on X often posting multiple times a day has been inactive since October 22, when she posted a comment asking for God’s protection.
The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of the social media influencer has continued, with an aide giving an account of her latest events.
In a post on her (Aoko’s) official page, the aide claims that when Aoko returned to Nairobi about two weeks ago, she found her front door “torn off its hinges”.
Aoko, according to the aide, has been living in the village since her arrest earlier this year.
She had only travelled to Nairobi for meetings and to attend court, the commentator said in the Post.
Her caretaker and security guard had reported strange men hanging around asking about her whereabouts, the post added.
“She called me panicked. I asked her to take pictures and leave,” the aide recounts adding she decided not to divulge this to anyone to prevent attracting the attention that she was around.
According to the aide, Aoko also had an interview with international media about her arrest ordeal and continued threats.
“After her tweet. she went incognito, which we family and friends thought it normal, perhaps she just wanted to confuse enemies,” she adds.
The aide now states that are yet to locate her whereabouts as to “whom do we report to?” the aide says as she asks police to produce if they might be holding her.
Her sudden disappearance has prompted the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to call for her immediate release.
On Monday, LSK President Faith Odhiambo urged Kenyans to reach out to the society with any information regarding the activist’s disappearance.
“We have heard that she is missing, and we are asking for any information. Our hotline is still working. Please reach out to the LSK. Every life counts,” Ms Odhiambo said during a follow-up on the arrest of activist Boniface Mwangi at the Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi.
“We ask that whoever is holding her release her immediately. Let’s not be a country where we live in intimidation or fear.”
Ms Aoko was charged in August at Milimani Court for allegedly disseminating false information through her X social media account.
The charges against Aoko included not only the publication of misleading content but also cyber harassment and the fraudulent use of electronic data.
The charges concerned an incident on 3 August, during which she reportedly posted defamatory and threatening material targeting two individuals identified as ‘Amber Ray’ and ‘Jamal.’ She was granted bail of Sh100,000.
The disappearance of Ms Aoko has sparked an outcry among Kenyans who believe she may be a victim of the abduction targeting activists and outspoken social media commentators.
The question ‘Where is Aoko?’ is turning into a rallying call on X as literally thousands of users voice their concerns and demand answers.
Embakasi East Member of the National Assembly (MP) Babu Owino, a close friend of Ms Aoko, expressed his concerns on X about the incident on Monday, painting a solemn picture of how serious the situation is.
“Aoko has been missing for days, and her whereabouts are not known. I have reached out to her family members and close friends, but no one knows where she is,” the MP said.
