President William Ruto has appointed former Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi as the Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.
In a gazette notice dated October 27, 2023, the President said Karangi would assume his new role beginning November for a period of five years.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint – Julius Waweru Karangi (RTD.) GEN. to be the Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 1st November 2023,” read the notice.
Prior to his appointment, Karangi was the chair of the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) board since 2022.
He had served as the KDF chief from 2011 until he retired in 2015.
President Ruto also re-appointed former Aldai MP and ex-Agriculture Minister Dr. Sally Kosgei as the Chancellor of Taita Taveta University. Kosgei was a one-time MP from 2007 up to 2013.
Other appointees included Prof. Paul Musili Wambua as University of Embu Chancellor and Dr. Fred Ojiambo who was appointed as Kirinyaga University Chancellor, both for the same period of five years.
