Kenya’s Oscar Selection Committee has named Nawi as the country’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The 2024 film delves into themes of love, identity, and cultural heritage, telling the story of a 14-year-old girl in Turkana caught between traditional expectations and modern-day pressures. As she navigates her struggles, Nawi reflects on broader societal tensions between tradition and progress, resonating with Kenyan and global audiences.
Beyond its gripping narrative, Nawi captivates with its stunning cinematography, showcasing Kenya’s diverse landscapes from bustling Nairobi to the tranquil countryside. This visual depth complements the story’s emotional core, offering a powerful cinematic experience.
Out of four entries submitted this year—Nawi, Searching for Amani, OTIS Janam, and Wamaitha—Nawi was chosen to represent Kenya in the international feature film category.
The film which premiered on August 24, 2024 in Nairobi, was shot in early 2023, and is a collaboration with the NGO Learning Lions. It aims to bring awareness to an issue that affects many young girls. According to a 2015 UNICEF report, one-third of women in Turkana were married before the age of 18.
The selection of Nawi highlights the growing global recognition of Kenyan cinema. Whether or not it wins an Oscar, this submission is a triumph for the country’s film industry, signalling its place on the international stage.
