Simeon Nyachae, a former powerful Cabinet minister, has died aged 88.
His son, Charles, informed the public that the family patriarch died at the Nairobi Hospital on Monday after a long illness.
Charles said that burial preparations are underway and more details will be available later.
He was speaking at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
The former Nyaribari Chache MP, who served the constituency for three terms, retired from active politics over 10 years ago.
Nyachae started his public service career as a District Officer in Kangundo, Machakos County in 1960 and rose to become a Provincial Commissioner in the Ministry of State for Provincial Administration & Internal Service in Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s government.
Following the death of Mzee Kenyatta, Nyachae helped the late Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, then the vice-president of Kenya, ascend to the top office despite machinations from quarters that were skeptical of Moi.
Nyachae later served as a Cabinet minister in Moi’s government and later in the administration of Mwai Kibaki.
