The government has allocated KSh946 million to prepare for the 61st Madaraka Day celebrations, which are set to take place today in Bungoma County.
According to government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, this expenditure includes significant investments in infrastructure, specifically the renovation of Masinde Muliro Stadium and the upgrading of Matulo Airstrip.
Mwaura detailed that KSh807 million has been utilized to complete phase one of the stadium, which now boasts a capacity of 40,000 seats. Additionally, KSh139 million has been spent on enhancing the airstrip, which will accommodate the landing of government officials for the celebrations.
However, the completion of the stadium is expected to require an additional KSh790 million. This amount will cover the costs of installing a perimeter fence and finishing the terraces. Overall, the total cost for the stadium will approach KSh1.6 billion.
The 2024 Madaraka Day event will be led by President William Ruto and will celebrate Kenya’s journey since gaining internal self-rule.
