Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela has signed for Premier Soccer League side Stellenbosch FC.
The South African club confirmed the deal with the former Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back with a statement on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
“Stellenbosch Football Club is pleased to announce that the club has acquired the services of Kenyan international defender Brian Onyango on a free transfer.
“The 30-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience to his name and boasts a track record of over 200 career appearances in South African football across previous spells with Mamelodi Sundowns, Maritzburg United, and Santos.
“Onyango becomes the first Kenyan player to represent Stellenbosch FC and will wear the No. 2 jersey this season,” the club announced.
Stellenbosch Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rob Benadie explained why they signed the experienced PSL winner.
“Brian is a player who has enjoyed great success during his career, and we are looking forward to adding his experience and winning mentality to our squad,” Benadie said.
“He has been brought in to bolster our defensive line, and we have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution towards both our domestic and continental ambitions.”
Mandela left Sundowns at the end of last season and had a brief training stint with SuperSport United. In the end, he did not sign with them and has now completed a move to Stellies.
The former Tusker defender had been linked with a move to a number of South African clubs, including his new side before the confirmation was made.
The new employers are Mandela’s fifth club in South Africa.
