The Kenya national rugby sevens team on Monday afternoon lost their second consecutive match at the Tokyo Olympic Games after going down 14-5 to African arch-rivals South Africa.
Shujaa had lost 19-14 to the USA in their opening game and needed a win against the Blitzboks who defended well and repelled all Kenyan attacks to win their second match and qualify for the quarterfinals.
South Africa led 14-5 at the interval courtesy of opening tries by Selvyn Davids and Shakes Soyizwapi.
Kenya pulled one back through veteran Collins Injera but there were no points on board for either side in the second half.
Shujaa will now have to defeat Ireland in the last pool match to stand a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.
The top two teams will be joined by two best losers in the quarterfinals.
Kenya’s next match is against Ireland on Tuesday at 5 am East African Time.
