An auctioneering firm in Kisumu has put up for auction eight undergarments belonging to a local tenant after a row over rent arrears.
In a notice appearing in the local dailies on Monday, January 30, 2023, Nyaluoyo Auctioneers stated that they are under instruction from Zachariah Sichenje Masika’s landlord to sell by auction 4 men’s underwear and 4 lady’s underwear belonging to the tenant to recover the money.
The sale, according to the auctioneers, will also include 2 kids’ bags, 3 eye adhesives, 1 white cream and 2 hip enlargement attires.
The public auction will take place at the firm’s yard in Kisumu at 11:00 am.
Terms of sale are cash at the fall of the hammer.
The notice has since gone viral with netizens poking fun at the auctioneering company and the landlord over the peculiar advert.
However, speaking to The Standard, James Josiah, the Director of Nyaluoyo Auctioneers said the notice has been misinterpreted.
Josiah told the publication that the law requires the firm to state publicly what is being auctioned despite the value.
He claimed that the tenant ran a boutique at Mega City Mall in Kisumu and vacated the premises unannounced, leaving the undergarments behind.
At the time, Josiah said, the tenant had accumulated rent arrears amounting to 120,000.
“The publication is in line with the law surrounding to auctioneering. The tenant moved out and left the undergarments behind, so there is no way I can take them and not declare. He had arrears of Sh120,000,” Josiah said.
