A man was crushed to death by an excavator, that he was operating, in a tragic accident in Karera village, Gatundu South.
According to eyewitnesses, the man was digging a trench on a steep section when the excavator overturned and rolled towards River Kahungu. Despite efforts to rescue him, the man was tragically crushed.
Residents, led by David Muchai, expressed concern over the circumstances leading to the accident. They questioned why the contractor allowed work to continue amid heavy rains, which made the area slippery and dangerous for workers. Muchai, who farms near the project site, described the victim as a hardworking and humble individual, stating, “He was out working hard to sustain his family only to be killed while at work. The place he was digging had a steep descent and the soil was slippery due to the rains. He was risking his life.”
The residents called on the government to intervene and halt construction work until the weather improved. “There’s no haste to complete this project, and therefore the contractor should be ordered to halt the works until the weather is favorable for resumption of work,” said Rebbeca Njeri, a resident.
However, when authorities were contacted for confirmation of the incident, they claimed to be unaware of the tragedy.
