Hundreds of anti-Finance Bill protesters have breached Parliament, marking an unprecedented event in Kenyan history.
The protesters entered Parliament hours after police had shot several demonstrators outside the Parliament Buildings. The situation escalated as the protesters set fire to several police vehicles.
This unrest followed the National Assembly’s approval of the Finance Bill, 2024, which has been widely criticized for imposing numerous taxes.
Despite heavy security, this is the first instance in Kenya’s history where protesters have broken through barriers to access Parliament. Previously, police had successfully blocked protesters from entering and had maintained a secure perimeter around the legislature.
