Sixteen people have been charged in an Eldoret court with breaking into the Timba XO club linked to Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, before stealing alcohol and other goods all worth Sh80 million.
They were also charged with maliciously damaging property worth Sh80 million at the same club during the youth-led street protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
The court will decide on bail after their lawyers refused to allow their clients to enter a virtual plea.
The club which was broken into and looted during last week’s protests has been temporarily closed for renovation.
A source close to the MP said the club had been closed for renovation.
“The club has been closed for renovation and will be opened once the renovation is complete,” the source who spoke on anonymity said.
The club was opened in May.
The suspected goons who invaded the joint destroyed glass walls, windows and doors of the building and made away with liquor worth thousands of shillings.
Sudi has already announced he is taking a sabbatical leave from public engagements and development activities.
He explained that he made the decision because his participation in activities such as Harambee has been used against him.
“Going forward, I’ll not participate in any Harambee because it has been used to malign and disparage the good course, let it be banned,” he said.
Sudi is named in court as one of the complainants in the case.
Investigations officer Ekiru Kirimoni told the court that the youth was being investigated for crimes including stealing, handling suspected stolen goods and malicious property damage.
