A brother of murder suspect Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe was picked up by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the night of Monday 12 February and questioned about the fugitive’s escape from lawful custody.
The detectives also nabbed the girlfriend of the fugitive’s brother, who was also questioned as DCI sleuths work round the clock to trace his whereabouts.
“It is true that the two were questioned on what they know following the escape of the murder suspect from lawful custody,” a sleuth privy to the matter told the Nation.
In another development, Ms Beatrice Ng’ethe, a lawyer related to Mr Kinyanjui who was picked up from her home by DCI officers last week Friday, spent most of Monday at Pangani police station assisting with the ongoing investigations.
“I am at the station assisting the police with the ongoing investigations. We will talk later,” she told this reporter.
The lawyer was released on Sunday evening, 11 February 2024, after paying a cash bail of Sh100,000.
A source close to the matter said Ms Ng’ethe became a person of interest in the investigation after she was found to be in constant communication with the fugitive.
A day before the murder suspect escaped from Pangani police station, Ms Ng’ethe had gone to talk to him as he was seeking legal advice on how to handle the matter.
Until now, Ms Ng’ethe has denied that she was aware of the suspect’s plans to escape lawful custody.
It has now emerged that Mr Kinyanjui met his brother, who is being questioned by police, shortly after he escaped from Pangani police station.
Mr Kinyanjui was supposed to spend time in cell number four at the station while awaiting extradition to the US, where he is accused of murdering Ms Margaret Mbitu. The US has already issued a warrant for his arrest.
