Joseph Irungu, better known as Jowie, has lodged an appeal against his death sentence for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani, according to a notice filed with the court.
In the notice obtained by Citizen Digital, Jowie expresses his intent to challenge both his conviction and the subsequent sentencing handed down by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.
The document, submitted through his legal representative Andrew Muge, specifies Jowie’s appeal against the decisions delivered by Justice Nzioka on February 9, 2024, in open court at Milimani, Nairobi. It further highlights the written judgment dated February 9, 2024, wherein Jowie was convicted of murder and subsequently sentenced to death on March 13, 2024.
“The appeal is against the conviction and sentence,” the court document states, underscoring Jowie’s determination to contest both aspects of the ruling.
Jowie, expressing his intention to attend the appeal hearing, was found guilty of the brutal murder of Monica at her Lamuria Gardens apartment, resulting in his conviction and subsequent imposition of the death penalty.
In delivering the maximum sentence for murder, Justice Nzioka emphasized that the severity of the punishment aligns with the gravity of the crime, which claimed the life of 29-year-old Monica.
The judge cited the weight of evidence presented during the trial and assessed the character of the convict in justifying her decision.
