Tragedy struck on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway near the Sayatu area, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving several individuals critically injured. The incident occurred when an 11-seater matatu operated by Eldoret Shuttles, carrying passengers of Eritrean nationality en route to Eldoret, collided with a stationary truck parked beside the road.
Reports from the Salgaa police station indicated that the truck had experienced mechanical issues, prompting it to be left unattended without any warning signs. As a result, the matatu crashed into the stationary vehicle, leading to fatalities and severe injuries among the passengers.
The injured were promptly rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital for medical attention. Due to language barriers, the identities of the survivors could not be immediately ascertained. Tragically, two individuals succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Twelve others, with varying degrees of injuries, are currently receiving treatment at the facility.
Authorities have transported the bodies of the deceased to the Nakuru County morgue, where they await identification and postmortem examination. The incident, which occurred at 9:40 pm on Saturday, serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by neglected vehicles on the roads and the importance of road safety measures.
