Tragedy struck in Makueni County as at least 10 people are feared to have drowned while attempting to cross the flooded Muswii River.
Police reported that a search and rescue operation was underway on Friday following the incident, which occurred as heavy rains caused the river, originating from neighboring Kajiado County, to burst its banks.
The Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud road faced severe disruptions as traffic came to a halt due to the flooding. The incident unfolded when a group of residents attempted to cross the swollen river in a lorry, only for disaster to strike as the vehicle was swept away by the powerful currents.
Witnesses watched in horror as the lorry, carrying passengers, was engulfed by the raging waters. Video footage captured the moment the victims were swept away, highlighting the perilous situation they faced.
The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rains expected over the weekend, urging individuals to steer clear of flooded areas. Across the country, heavy rainfall has led to widespread flooding.
In light of these conditions, the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) issued an advisory on Friday for motorists traveling along the Lodwar-Lokichar Road. They were urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching the bridge between Karoge and Kasuroi, as recent heavy rainfall had caused damage to a section of the road on the Lokichar side of the bridge.
