President William Ruto has strongly condemned any misappropriation of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) by elected Members of Parliament, stating that such actions should disqualify them from being elected.
Speaking on Friday during the 20th anniversary celebration of the NG-CDF, Ruto emphasized that misuse of CDF funds amounts to betrayal of the electorate.
“Any member of parliament who presides over the misappropriation of CDF or the theft of CDF should never be elected. They should never be elected because it is the ultimate betrayal of the people who elected you,” he asserted.
Ruto further highlighted that elected MPs receive a salary of Sh1 million and therefore have no justification for mishandling funds intended for the education of their constituents.
“The people of Kenya have elected you, you have a salary of Sh1 million and then the money meant for the bursary of their children, money meant for the education of their children wewe umeenda kuhangaika nayo mpaka imepotea,” the President said.
“Wacha tu niwaambie ukweli, mtu kama huyo afukuzwe kabisa na mapema.”
The anniversary event took place at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
Since 2016, the NG-CDF has been financing projects exclusive to the National Government. The majority of funds are allocated to education (78.2 per cent), followed by security (5.7 per cent), and climate change (1.6 per cent), with the remaining percentage shared among other projects.
The 78.2 per cent allocated to education mainly comprises bursary funds for needy and deserving children from impoverished backgrounds. Annually, the NG-CDF dedicates approximately Sh15 billion to bursaries, benefiting an average of 1.2 million disadvantaged students, according to the NG-CDF Board.
