President William Ruto has announced the lifting of the 12-floor cap on storey buildings in Eastleigh, raising it to 30 floors to increase accommodation options for citizens.
During an impromptu visit to Mathare, the President explained that the move is aimed at improving living conditions and promoting harmonious neighborhoods.
“As the Commander in Chief, I have decided that in Eastleigh, buildings can now go up to 30 floors instead of the previous 12 floors. This will provide more accommodation options and promote harmonious living in our neighborhoods,” he stated.
Ruto also revealed plans to construct 20,000 affordable houses in slum neighborhoods such as Mathare, Kiamaiko, and Kibra. Once completed, residents will have the opportunity to own houses through a rent-to-buy agreement, with monthly payments of only Ksh3,000.
“By Friday, we will advertise for the construction of 20,000 housing units from Kibra, through Kiamaiko, all the way to Mwiki. This will begin the process of making slum dwellers homeowners in Kenya,” he declared.
“The houses we are building will have water supply, power, and washrooms, and residents will only pay Ksh3,000 per month,” he assured.
Ruto’s directive aligns with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s proposal in March to review the floor limit for residential buildings in Nairobi County to 75 floors. Sakaja argued that the county was facing space constraints, and the limit would be adjusted based on the affected areas.
