President William Ruto steered clear of politics during the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, instead emphasizing the importance of unity among leaders regardless of their political affiliations.
Ruto underscored that unity is essential for Kenya’s success and urged cabinet secretaries and elected leaders to recognize the privilege of holding office and to deliver on their mandates effectively.
“We all indeed understand what the challenges are and what we need to do,” Ruto said. “I ask all of us to have the courage to do the right thing however difficult it is; it is the only way we can pull our country and take our country into the future.”
Ruto highlighted the country’s goal of creating more jobs for the youth through the digital economy and ensuring a prosperous nation. He challenged leaders to double their efforts to realize this vision.
“Without minding whether this constituency belongs to a member who is in government or in opposition, we are all one nation. Our target is to make sure that every child in Kenya has an opportunity,” he stated.
Ruto stressed that there would be no prosperous county without a thriving Kenya, noting that their destinies are intertwined. As the father figure of the nation, he sees it as his responsibility to build bridges and ensure all leaders work together.
The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual ecumenical event organized under the auspices of the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate Speaker. This year’s theme was ‘Hope,’ and it was organized by a group of dedicated volunteers who make up the National Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee. The event’s purpose is to meet, engage, interact, and pray for the nation in the company of leaders from all sectors of society.
The first Kenya National Prayer Breakfast took place in May 2003, shortly after the late President Mwai Kibaki took office.
