President William Ruto on Thursday defended himself against criticism over the expenses incurred during his recent state visit to the United States.
The scrutiny arose after Ruto traveled aboard a chartered Boeing 737-700, reportedly operated by Royal Jet of Dubai. The trip, covering Nairobi-Atlanta-Washington D.C., was reported to have cost taxpayers approximately Ksh.98 million, with the potential total cost surpassing Ksh.200 million for a round trip.
Addressing the issue during the national prayer breakfast at Safari Park in Nairobi, Ruto asserted his commitment to frugality and responsible stewardship of public funds. He claimed that the actual cost of chartering the luxurious jet was Ksh.10 million, a significant reduction from the initial Ksh.20 million he had offered.
“I am a very responsible steward, believe you me. There is no way I can spend Ksh.200 million; in fact, it cost the Republic of Kenya less than Ksh.10 million because I am not a madman,” Ruto stated.
He explained that after receiving a quote of Ksh.70 million for the trip, he opted for Kenya Airways. However, his “Arabian friends” offered a better deal, allowing him to charter the jet for Ksh.10 million.
Ruto emphasized his commitment to leading by example in ensuring fiscal responsibility. “Look at me, Kenyans, look at me again. I must lead from the front as I tell others to tighten up their belts; mine must be where to begin. So relax, and the debate must end because I am that responsible and it is going to be that way,” he added.
He also reiterated his plan to achieve a balanced budget within three years.
