Roots Party 2022 presidential running mate Justina Wamae has turned down her appointment to a health taskforce by President William Ruto.
In a Monday statement on X, Wamae thanked President Ruto for recognizing her strength, capacity, ability, but said she was unable to take up the offer as she is on maternity leave.
“After careful consideration, I have decided to decline your offer given that I’m currently on maternity leave and this development would affect my ability to work effectively at this time,” Wamae wrote on X.
The 20-member task force established by President Ruto aims to conduct an audit of health resources and develop comprehensive strategies to strengthen the healthcare workforce.
Despite being named to the team by Ruto, Wamae has chosen to turn down the position. In a statement, she expresses appreciation for the recognition of her capabilities but cites her ongoing maternity leave as a significant obstacle to fulfilling the role effectively.
Wamae emphasizes that the demands of the position would conflict with her current personal commitments. The task force comprises various healthcare professionals including Acting Ministry of Health Director General Patrick Amoth and Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah.
These experts, along with other appointed members, bring a range of specialized knowledge to address critical challenges facing the health workforce.
Leadership roles within the task force have been assigned to Edna Tallam-Kimaiyo and Morris Kaburu as joint secretaries, while Hezron Omollo and Vivienne Eyase will serve as secretaries.
Khama Rogo has been appointed as chair with Judith Guserwa as vice chairperson. The group’s six-month term commenced on July 5, 2024. On January 26, 2023, Wamae openly admitted to requesting a position from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Yes, I did. It is common practice to ask, beg, seek and knock on doors for anything in Kenya including a job. My case is not unique. Additionally, I was running-mate to serve the nation but I’m a businesswoman and what I make is enough for me and my family hence my not getting the job to serve the nation doesn’t mean that I’m dying,” she said.
