Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’s bodyguard Hudson Wakise was on Thursday laid to rest in a low-key burial ceremony at his rural home in Kironge village in Taita Taveta county.
Wakise, who shot dead his wife before turning the gun on himself, was not given the traditional military and police honors accorded to fallen servicemen.
His final journey was attended by close friends and family members, with police officers donning civilian attire at the burial.
The lifeless bodies of Wakise and his wife Pauline Wakasa, who was also a police officer, were found at their home in Nairobi on April 7th. Wakise was attached to the VIP protection of CS Matiang’i.
Wakise is said to have killed his spouse and later committed suicide following a domestic brawl.
Unlike Wakise, Wakasa was accorded full police respect including a 21-gun salute, with the casket draped with a police service flag and carried by police officers.
Wakasa, a traffic officer who was based at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi, was buried in Malava, Kakamega County on April 11th.
In a message of condolence to the families of the two officers, CS Matiang’i said, “I am deeply pained by the tragic incident involving PC Hudson Wakise and his wife PC Pauline Wakasa both young and vibrant Police officers with brilliant futures tragically ended in their shocking demise.”
He added: “It’s a rude awakening to psychosocial challenges amongst some of our young officers that we have no choice but to now pay greater attention to. My sincere condolences to their families and friends.”
