The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced the extension of curfew hours for 60 more days.
This comes after the expiry of 60 days that President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed for the adherence 10 pm to 4 am curfew.
According to the gazette notice issued by the CS dated May 28, the curfew hours will now continue until July.
“This order shall apply during the hours of darkness between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. in the morning with the effect from May 28, 2021, and shall remain in effect for a period of 60 days thereof,” he stated.
He further directed that there would be no public gatherings, processions, or movement either alone or as a group during the period of the curfew.
“The gatherings will only be permitted, in writing, by a police officer in charge of the police in a county or a police officer in charge of the police in charge of a division/ sub-county,” he noted.
Essential service providers are exempted from the order.
They include medical professionals and health workers, National security officers and National Government administration officers, Licensed pharmaceuticals companies, pharmacies and drug stores, Licensed broadcasters, and media houses.
Those working with Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Airports Authority and Licensed Civil Aviation Service Providers, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, Kenya Ports Authority and Licensed Sea and Port Operators. Kenya Maritime Authority and Licensed Maritime Service Providers, Power production and distribution companies, Kenya Railways Corporation, Kenya Pipeline Company, Water and sanitation service providers, Food and farm produce processors, distributors, dealers, wholesalers, and transporters are also exempted from the order.
This comes even as the positivity rate stands at 8.9 per cent as of Saturday statistics.
Total confirmed positive cases in the country stand at 170,485 while the cumulative tests conducted so far are 1,806,438, as per the aforementioned date.
Cases of recoveries in the country stand at 116,133 of whom 84,426 are from home based isolation and care while the remaining 31,077 were discharged from various hospitals.
Sadly, a total of 3,141 deaths have been recorded since the first case of the pandemic was announced in March last year.
As of Saturday, a total of 968,733 persons have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease countrywide. Of these 293,240 are aged 58 years and above
Health workers account for 165,409, teachers are 152,315 while security officers are 82,007.
Globally about 169.6 people have tested positive for the virus. Of these, 151. 4 million people have recovered and unfortunately, 3.5 million people have died.
