Popular fast food eatery Sonford Fish and Chips went up in flames on Friday night shortly after 10pm.
The fire quickly spread to the neighbouring stalls on Moi Avenue before fire fighters managed to put it out.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established though initial police report says the blaze started in the restaurant’s kitchen.
The fast food, which is located along Moi Avenue at the Nairobi CBD is one of the longest serving eateries at the heart of town. Sonford is known for its chips and chicken, an affordable delicacy for anyone visiting the Central Business District.
Prior to the curfew, Sonford operated 24 hours a day, attracting revellers from all parts of the city. It was a popular stop-over for many partygoers on their way home after a night of heavy indulgence.
The building on Moi avenue is dotted with stalls selling mobile phones, clothing and many other small businesses.
According to footage doing rounds on social media, firefighters arrived on the site and were able to control the fire.
This comes a few days after Nairobi’s Gikomba market also went up in flames with property worth millions burning down to ashes.
The fire also affected 4 apartments in the Molo Line area of Gikomba with residents spending the night out in the cold.
The Government later announced plans to expedite the construction of modern markets in Gikomba and install CCTV cameras.
Addressing the Press on Friday 6th August 2021, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho stated that the Government would work closely with the leadership to create access roads for faster deployment of emergency services.
