The National Traffic and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Monday launched a nationwide traffic enforcement operation against rogue motorists.
According to government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, the exercise kicked off on February 28 and targets motorists with un-prescribed number plates as well as vehicles with foreign plates without motor vehicle foreign permits.
NTSA officers will also be on the lookout for motorists who have additional lights on their vehicles, specifically strobe lights and flashing lights.
Also targeted are operators of illegal Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), ‘usiku sacco’ operators and drivers of taxi cars such as the Voxy, Sienta and Probox models.
Oguna added that the government will be cracking down on regional-specific violations, such as over-speeding vehicles ferrying miraa in Meru and Embu counties.
At the same time, unlicensed tuk-tuks operating around Nairobi and Mombasa counties have been put on notice while In the Western region, Oguna said the government will monitor vehicles ferrying sugarcane.
The police spokesperson has also stated that the operation also seeks to weed out rogue motorists operating without a valid road service license, uniform, driver’s license, reflective jacket and PSV badge.
Other traffic and safety violations include operating without a helmet, motor vehicle insurance, carrying excess passengers for both matatus and boda-boda riders, as well as driving with worn-out tires.
The officers will also be targeting defective motor vehicles and motorists operating without an inspection sticker and a speed governor.
