Japhet Koome was on Friday sworn in as the new Inspector General of Police.
Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the swearing-in at the Supreme court of Kenya.
Koome was approved by the National Assembly on Thursday.
He will take over the leadership of the National Police Service, replacing Hilary Mutyambai who went on terminal leave due to health reasons. He had six months left on his term.
Koome was vetted for the position on Tuesday by a joint committee of the Senate and National Assembly.
Members of Parliament unanimously approved the nomination of Koome for the position of Inspector General of police.
Both the National and Senate Assembly gave Koome a clean bill of health for the role.
The Inspector General’s Office was established following the promulgation of the 2010 constitution. Retired IGP David Mwole Kimaiyo was appointed as the first office holder on December 20, 2012, to 2014.
Joseph Kipchirchir Boinett was the second and was in charge from March 2015 to March 2019.
Engineer Japhet Koome, who has 31 years of experience in the Police Service takes over the mantle from Mr Noor Gabow who has been holding the position in an acting capacity following the retirement of IG Hilary Mutyambai on health grounds as announced by President William Ruto on September 27, 2022.
Koome joined the police service in 1991 when he was enlisted in the then Kenya Police Force as a Police Constable. This was after graduating from the University of Nairobi in 1990, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
