There was drama in a Nairobi court on Wednesday after a lawyer assaulted a businessman in a child upkeep case.
The parties had come to court for the hearing of a case in which the woman is demanding over Sh600,000 from the man.
While standing in the corridors discussing, the lawyer-Robert Asembo was seen throwing blows at the man as the lady looked on.
The lawyer is representing the estranged wife in the case.
According to court papers, the woman says that they have been legally married for over 20 years however separated in January 2021.
But as the parties approached the magistrate’s chambers, an altercation ensued between Asembo and the businessman.
The woman tried to persuade the advocate to calm down as the squabble intensified.
In the process, the businessman took refuge at the magistrate’s chambers and Asembo walked away with his client.
In the circumstances, the case was pushed to December 1.
The woman and the businessman cohabited and were blessed with three male children but later separated. The children are aged 22, 16 and 14 respectively.
In court papers, the woman has accused the businessman of refusing to take care of the children’s welfare and discharging his parental rights
“Despite him being a man of means who is quite able to provide for his children, he has been erratic in carrying out his parental responsibilities, including the pressing needs and urgent responsibility of paying school fees, meeting education-related expenses and other relevant needs of his children,” she said.
The court had on February 28 issued several orders against the businessman.
It directed that college fees for one of her children be paid by him.
He was also required to pay Sh20,000 monthly for food and utilities for the two younger children.
The money was to be paid by the fifth of every month beginning March.
