A police officer is being held on robbery with violence charges after allegedly assaulting a university student and robbing him of his phone and other valuables.
The officer, identified as Kevin Sila, and his accomplice, David Muringu, allegedly accosted two Machakos University students as they rode their bicycles to their rented quarters last night.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the duo, who were riding a motorcycle with the registration number KMTE 363W, had flagged down the students in the early morning hours before descending on one of them ransacking his pockets and stealing his phone.
His roommate, on the other hand, narrowly escaped the attack and fled screaming, attracting neighbors who also happened to be university students.
The students responded to the distress calls and rescued their comrade from the officer and his accomplice’s wrath.
After returning the stolen phone, the officer tried to flee, but it was too late; his colleagues from the Machakos police station had already arrived and had already arrested him and his colleague.
The police officer and his accomplice are being detained at the Machakos police station pending their arraignment on charges of robbery with violence.
