Kibingoti village in Kirinyaga county has been thrown into mourning after an 11-year-old boy allegedly took away his life.
Confirming the incident, Moses Koskei the area police boss while noting that investigations into the incident have begun, intimated to a local publication that the boy who is a grade 4 pupil at Kibirigwi primary school may have taken his life because his grandparents delayed buying him new Christmas clothes.
Koskei also claimed that the deceased’s mother who works in Qatar had sent some money to his grandparents for his new clothes, however, they (grandparents) asked him to be patient and wait to have the clothes after Christmas because of the current price of clothes.
“It seems they had talked with the mother who confirmed to him that she had sent the money. I think he interpreted the call of patience by the grandparents as blatantly refusing to buy him the new clothes,” Koskei stated.
The deceased’s grandmother, Rose Ritho recounted that the boy dug a deep hole within the compound prior to the incident. When she asked him he told her that he was preparing to plant a banana stem.
Consequently, his grandmother cautioned him and asked him to cover it since it would be dangerous to have a banana plantation near an electricity cable.
“I had just got from the farm and saw him digging a deep hole beside our house. I sought why he was doing so. He told me he wanted to plant a banana stem but I cautioned him to stop and cover it because it would be dangerous to have a banana near an electricity cable. At first, he seemed reluctant but later covered the hole with soil,” she stated.
She added: “At the scene where he was digging, I later recovered some sticks that are normally improvised while measuring the length size of a human grave. This totally shocked me,”
The body of the deceased was taken to a nearby hospital morgue.
