Comedian Eric Omondi has been arrested for the second time in a month, this time as he tried to distribute flour to his fans at City Stadium.
Omondi had invited fans to attend as he distributes a packet of Unga to everyone who plans to accompany him to State House.
The comedian had previously stated that on Tuesday, March 7, he would lead a march from Uhuru Park to the State House to present CVs, rent arrears, school fee arrears, shopping lists for basic necessities, and electricity bills.
Omondi is being held at the Industrial Area Police Station.
The popular comedian, who has been vocal about the economic hardships facing Kenyans, was on Wednesday intercepted by police officers as he attempted to hand out bags of flour to his supporters at City Stadium.
Omondi stated that he was attempting to assist his fans who were unable to afford basic necessities such as flour, sugar, and cooking oil.
He claimed to have purchased flour out of his own pocket and wished to share it with his devoted followers.
“Wakenya wenzetu hawana unga. Ni unga tu nilikuwa napeana,” Omondi said before he was whisked away.
This is not Omondi’s first arrest for protesting against the high cost of living. He was arrested on February 21 after blocking Parliament Road with a group of shirtless men demanding an audience with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. He was eventually released on bail.
Omondi has also had run-ins with the law for other reasons. He was arrested in November 2021 for storming Parliament buildings in order to demand more local content on media stations.
He claimed that foreign music and film were stealing the airwaves from local talent.
