The cost of importing cars will go up by 10 percent after the government increases taxes on motor vehicle imports.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has increased import duty on imported vehicles from 25 percent to 35 percent currently.
Kenya had sought approval from the East African Community (EAC) under the common external tariff to raise the duty.
A higher tariff on vehicles means that the cost of importing cars will increase, coming at a time when the country’s currency is losing value against its American counterpart.
Already, prices of popular car brands such as Toyota, Suzuki, and Mazda, among others, have gone up, making it difficult for locals to source them from countries such as Japan, Singapore, et cetera.
However, motor vehicle dealers have protested the increment, saying that the public was not informed of the changes.
