A 31-year-old Ghanaian actress has been sentenced to three months in jail for posting a naked picture of herself and her son on social media.
Rosemond Brown, alias Akuapem Poloo, was convicted by an Accra court this week following her prosecution in a case supported by Child Rights International (CRI). She broke down in tears after a judge read out the sentence.
Rosemond posted the photo on Instagram in July last year to mark her son’s seventh birthday. In the image, she is squatting and holding the minor’s hands, both are semi naked.
“I’m naked in front of you because this is how naked I was giving birth to you, so in case you find me naked lying somewhere don’t pass by me but rather see me as your mom who brought you to life. Happy birthday to you @sonof_poloo,“ she captioned the photo.
The post went viral on social media, attracting huge backlash.
“As a child rights organization, we deem this act as a violation of the Welfare Principle of the Children’s Act and abuse of the child’s rights to privacy and dignity,” said CRI in a statement.
Following public uproar, Rosemond was arrested by officers from the Ghanaian Police Criminal Investigations Department.
The actress pleaded guilty to three charges leveled against her.
