Kisii Governor Simba Arati expressed concerns on Friday about the safety of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, suggesting that Matiangi was facing potential danger to his life from criminal gangs.
Arati urged the government to provide Matiangi with state security due to his significant role in Kenya’s anti-terrorism efforts during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Arati highlighted Matiangi’s contributions in dealing with security threats such as Al Shabaab and restoring peace in the country. He emphasized the need for the government to prioritize Matiangi’s security, especially since Arati claimed that Matiangi had to change vehicles frequently to evade potential threats after the withdrawal of state security personnel.
Furthermore, Arati criticized what he perceived as dictatorial tendencies within the government, particularly challenging the administration of President William Ruto to focus on uniting Kenyans rather than exerting control. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity in governance and urged for collaboration among leaders.
Matiangi, who had been vocal in criticizing Ruto during the latter part of the Kenyatta presidency, has maintained a low profile since alleged attempts to arrest him in February 2023. Despite accusations of orchestrating arrests of Ruto allies and facing legal challenges, Matiangi has sought legal protection against potential arrest, citing concerns for his safety.
