According to Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, Kenya has tragically lost 179 lives due to ongoing floods across the country. In the past 24 hours alone, 10 more lives were claimed by the floods, bringing the death toll to 179.
Among the deceased are 164 adults and 15 children. Additionally, 125 people have been injured and are currently receiving treatment in various health facilities.
“The government extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” Mwaura expressed.
Mwaura also revealed that 20 more people have been reported missing, bringing the total to 90. Furthermore, the floods have led to the displacement of an additional 1,127 households, totaling 31,341 displaced households. Overall, floods have displaced 195,011 people.
To assist the displaced, the government has established displacement camps to provide alternative accommodation. Relief Operations Centers have been set up at the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB), with senior government officials leading response efforts in affected counties.
The government has intensified its response efforts, with the Kenya Defence Forces aiding in recovery and evacuation operations. Distribution of food and non-food items is ongoing across the country, with a relief operation planned for the next two months.
Mwaura highlighted that relief items, including rice, beans, fortified foods, blankets, kitchen sets, jikos, solar lamps, and sanitary pads, have been distributed to various sub-counties including Athi River, Githurai, Garissa, Magarini, Malindi, Rabai, and Mathioya.
The government has completed mapping out all fragile ecosystems nationwide to issue early evacuation advisories. By the end of Wednesday, residents in risky areas, such as those near dams, water reservoirs, areas prone to mudslides, landslides, and riparian lands, are required to relocate within 48 hours.
Kenyans are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and observe flood alerts. The government calls on citizens to cooperate fully with emergency responders and local authorities during evacuations or rescue operations, especially in high-risk areas.
