The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advance notice to Nairobi residents, informing them of anticipated “very heavy” rainfall on Friday.
The weatherman advised residents to stay vigilant and be prepared for “heavy to very heavy” rainfall. They urged people to stay updated by visiting the department’s website at http://meteo.go.ke.
According to a five-day forecast, the department stated that heavy rainfall currently affecting many parts of the country is expected to persist over several regions.
“Heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, North-western, and North-eastern Kenya,” said Director David Gikungu.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto addressed the nation on Friday, acknowledging the devastating impact of persistent torrential rainfall, which has resulted in 210 fatalities, injuries to many, and extensive damage to property, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
“No corner of our country has been spared from this havoc,” he emphasized.
Ruto mentioned that water levels in the Seven Forks Hydro-Electric power dams have reached historic highs, with Masinga and Kiambere dams already overflowing.
The President expressed concern over the controlled spillage, which poses a threat of flooding into neighboring settlements and downstream devastation in Garissa and Tana River counties.
“Sadly, we have not seen the last of this perilous period, as the situation is expected to escalate. Meteorological reports paint a dire picture,” he warned.
