The Employment and Labour Relations Court has ordered former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria’s Personal Assistant Peter Muturi Karanja to appear before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday next week.
In the ruling issued on Friday, Justice Nixon Sifuna directed Karanja to pay a cash bail of Ksh. 300,000. Failure to pay the bail would result in the lapse of his anticipatory bail, and he would be required to appear before the court on Tuesday.
The court’s decision followed an urgent application filed by Wa Iria under a certificate of urgency, which had initially barred the commission from arresting him in the Ksh. 140 million graft case involving seven other individuals.
During the hearing, the EACC noted that the judge clarified that the conservatory orders obtained from the Murang’a High Court by Wa Iria only stopped the arrest of three accused persons, including the former Governor, his wife Jane Waigwe Kimani, and her brother Solomon Mutura Kimani.
Justice Sifuna emphasized that the remaining suspects should proceed to take a plea in the matter.
This development comes after Wa Iria was summoned to appear before the EACC on Tuesday of this week. However, his lawyers attended instead and requested a postponement of his appearance to Wednesday.
Nevertheless, Wa Iria did not appear for questioning but instead sought orders from a Murang’a court to prevent his arrest.
