The Ministry of Education has issued a directive for schools severely impacted by floods to remain closed until the situation is under control.
In a statement released on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Machogu highlighted the significant impact of floods on several schools, making it difficult for some students to resume their studies. The ministry emphasized that these affected schools would stay closed until alternative infrastructure is arranged for learning purposes.
“In the meantime, the management of these schools should devise strategies to make up for lost time once learning resumes,” the ministry stated. Additionally, all school administrators and parents were urged to prioritize the safety of pupils and students upon school reopening.
The government has also urged people seeking shelter in schools to find alternative accommodations in anticipation of a phased reopening. Field education officers in areas where schools are hosting displaced individuals have been instructed to collaborate with local National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to identify alternative accommodations promptly.
“Some individuals displaced by the heavy rains have taken refuge in schools. Such schools may not be able to resume regular academic activities,” a portion of the Ministry of Education’s statement read.
Regional education officers have been tasked with implementing measures to ensure uninterrupted learning. These measures include resource sharing among neighboring schools and the adoption of multi-grade and multi-shift educational models.
