The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that former Migori governor Okoth Obado is the biological father of the unborn daughter of murdered university student Sharon Otieno.
On Friday, the DPP presented a DNA test report showing a 99.99% probability that “Okoth Obado is the father of Sharon’s daughter.”
This revelation adds significant complexity to the high-profile case that has been ongoing for the past six years.
Obado, his personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and Obiero are on trial for the deaths of Sharon and her unborn baby on September 3, 2018, in Homa Bay County.
A postmortem examination revealed that Sharon Otieno’s death resulted from “force trauma.” The prosecution detailed how her murder was meticulously planned.
The court heard that Sharon was summoned by a call from the second accused, who was also Obado’s assistant. They arranged to meet at a hotel in Rongo, where, unbeknownst to her, she met her death.
In its closing statement, the prosecution urged the court to find that Okoth Obado and the other two accused have a case to answer. They presented a theory supported by the last witness, recommending charges against the accused.
The murder trial involved 42 witnesses, each contributing crucial information to assist the court’s final determination. With testimonies concluded, the court is now set to rule on whether the three accused should stand trial.
Obado, through senior counsel Kioko Kilukumi, stated they will seek his acquittal, arguing that there is no case against his client based on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
What remains is for parties to file their submissions before the court can decide whether to place the accused on their defense.
The judge said a date would be communicated virtually for parties to file their submissions.
