The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday apprehended four police officers for questioning over alleged extortion.
EACC said this followed public complaints that the officers were extorting motorists at the junction of Embu-Siakago Road in Embu.
The Commission said members of the public filed the complaint after monitoring activities at the junction for several days.
The Commission’s Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said the officers were escorted to the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station where they were processed, and later booked at Kilimani Police Station where they will be held pending further action.
EACC is mandated by law to investigate corruption cases and make recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate action.
However, regarding civil cases relating to corruptly acquired assets, EACC has the power to file cases in court for the recovery of such assets.
According to the law, whoever accepts, obtains, or attempts to obtain from another person for themselves or for any other person any “undue advantage” as a motive or reward to induce a public servant to improperly or dishonestly perform a public duty, or refrain from performing a public duty through corrupt or illegal means is guilty of an offence called corruption.
Corruption is dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.
Bribery is offering, giving or receiving anything of value to induce a person to act or to reward a person for having acted.
