Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado is set to lose property worth Ksh.235 million, believed to have been acquired through proceeds of corruption.
On Tuesday, the High Court granted the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) the authority to seize and auction the properties, which include residential houses and two high-end cars.
The EACC revealed that the properties, including a Ksh.40 million home in Nairobi’s Loresho estate, are linked to Obado and his associates and are proceeds of corruption and unexplained wealth siphoned from the Migori County Government. The court orders, issued by Justice Esther Maina, followed an out-of-court settlement between Obado and the EACC.
In the consent judgment delivered in the civil forfeiture case, the High Court adopted an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) settlement reached by the parties. The EACC stated that the consent judgment does not impact the ongoing criminal case against the former Governor and his children, who allegedly benefited directly from the fraudulent scheme to the tune of Ksh.73 million.
The properties targeted for forfeiture include Sunrise Centre, a commercial block valued at Ksh.88 million, a five-storey residential block valued at Ksh.57.6 million, two apartments in Greenspan, each worth Ksh.9 million, a Ksh.10 million residential property, and two Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles.
This legal action represents a significant step in the fight against corruption, aiming to recover assets acquired through illicit means and ensure accountability for public officials.
