The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has issued a public warning regarding the partial impassability of some roads in Nairobi and Kiambu.
In an announcement on Wednesday, KURA stated that the heavy rains in the two counties have affected several roads.
“Following the heavy rains experienced last night across the country, the following roads within Nairobi and Kiambu Counties have been heavily affected leading to partial closure,” KURA said. Notably, Enterprise Road, Eastern Bypass, and Thika Bypass have been badly affected.
“The traffic police and our technical team are on the ground to direct traffic and enhance the safety of motorists,” the roads authority assured.
KURA pledged to keep Kenyans updated as the situation unfolds and urged motorists to drive safely, avoiding attempts to cross flooded sections.
The heavy rains caused significant disruption, with Thika Road flooding on Wednesday morning, particularly at Kenyatta University and Juja.
The flow of traffic along the Thika Super Highway was impacted, especially the Thika-bound underpass at the Juja Flyover area. Motorists resorted to using the Service Lane to access the highway past the High Point area. Traffic Police Offices within the Juja Police Station were also submerged.
Police took proactive measures by turning away motorists on both sides of the road to prevent potential accidents, urging caution for those using the Juja Super Highway.
Motor vehicles traveling from Nairobi towards Thika were redirected back to the Githurai roundabout due to floods cutting off Kahawa Sukari. Traffic officers were deployed to divert motorists towards alternative routes, such as Mwihoko Road to join the Eastern Bypass or 44 Road towards Kahawa West, allowing them to proceed to Thika.
The heavy rains also affected Githurai and Mwiki areas during the night, with the rain continuing into Wednesday morning.
The service lane from Kasarani towards Githurai, particularly at the Car Wash area, was affected by floods as well.
