The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has instructed owners of flooded petrol stations to suspend their operations immediately to safeguard public safety and maintain the quality of petroleum products.
This directive comes in response to the ongoing heavy rains and consequent flooding in various parts of the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, EPRA raised concerns about the integrity of Petroleum Underground Storage Tank (UST) systems, which could be compromised by floodwaters or prolonged heavy rainfall.
The authority emphasized that water presence in the Underground Storage Tanks affects the quality of petroleum products, potentially leading to vehicle breakdowns.
“Any retail petrol station affected by flooding should temporarily cease operations and undergo monitoring. These stations must assess the extent of flooding, clean up any debris, and ensure the quality of their products before resuming operations,” the statement read.
“Furthermore, retail station owners should anticipate potential environmental impacts of flooding and take appropriate measures to mitigate them.”
EPRA urged petroleum retail station owners to promptly liaise with relevant government authorities or regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with necessary protocols or regulations.
“The Authority is ready to provide any assistance necessary to ensure public safety and the quality of petroleum products,” EPRA stated.
Heavy rains have caused flooding in most parts of the country, resulting in over 200 deaths and displacing thousands. In response, the military has joined search and rescue efforts in several areas.
Many people are missing after being swept away by the floodwaters.
