Four police officers believed to have sold the illicit brew that killed 17 people in Kirinyaga have been detained.
The officers, who are believed to have sold the brew, which had been stored as an exhibit at Kiamaciri police station, were arrested and arraigned in Baricho Law Courts on Tuesday.
Senior Principal Magistrate Stephen Nyaga has allowed police to detain them at Kerugoya police station until March 7, 2024, to enable them to complete investigations.
The suspects will be charged with stealing exhibit and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The immediate former Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kiamaciri police station Kennedy Mugambi, who is currently an SOP in Kabete is among those who have been arraigned.
Mugambi, alongside Allan Kiamazi ,Brian Kariuki and Francis Muteithia allegedly broke into a store at Kiamaciri police station in Mwea West Sub-county and stole the exhibit which they then sold to a local trader.
The illicit brew was then sold at a bar in Kangai, leading to the death of 17 people.
The officers are said to have sold the brew to Carlifonia bar owner John Muriithi Karaya on the night of February 4, 2024, at Ksh.20,000.
Muriithi appeared before Baricho Law Courts on February 7, and was detained for 20 days.
