Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held discussions on Tuesday with Zhou Pingjian, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, at his residence in Karen.
Pingjian paid a courtesy visit to Gachagua in anticipation of the Deputy President’s upcoming trip to China. Their talks focused on agricultural products, particularly coffee, tea, and avocado.
Gachagua, who has been actively advocating for reforms in the coffee sector, emphasized the need for interventions to prevent its collapse following prolonged low production levels.
“We deliberated on key areas of mutual interest between our nations, with a strong focus on enhancing trade and investment,” Gachagua remarked.
He underscored the longstanding and cordial relations between Kenya and China, built on mutual trust and mutual benefit, particularly in trade and development. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1963, briefly suspended in 1967, and fully reinstated in 1978. Since then, bilateral relations have flourished, marked by extensive economic cooperation and Chinese investments, making China Kenya’s largest trading partner.
The robust trade, investments, and infrastructure projects led by China have significantly contributed to Kenya’s overall development.
