Gospel singer William Getumbe finds himself in legal trouble as the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) confirms his arrest over allegations of indecent content. This action follows a seven-day demand notice issued to Getumbe for purportedly violating the Films and Stage Play Act, according to a letter obtained by the Star newspaper and signed by Nelly Muluka, the acting CEO of KFCB.
Getumbe was apprehended in Eldoret on Tuesday with the assistance of police from Kapsoya Police Station. The charges against him include filming without a license and distributing unclassified audio-visual content, offenses that contravene sections of the Films and Stage Play Act. Additionally, he faces accusations related to the distribution, public exhibition, and possession of ‘obscene’ cinematograph films, as well as the public exhibition of indecent shows, all punishable under the penal code.
KFCB has urged the public to report any instances of indecent content shared or exhibited on social media platforms, reaffirming its commitment to combating the production and dissemination of such material.
This development comes shortly after Getumbe and fellow gospel artist Chris Embarambamba were instructed to remove their latest songs, ‘Niko Uchi’ and ‘Yesu Ninyandue’, from all media platforms due to violations of the Films and Stage Plays Act. Muluka expressed concerns over the content of ‘Niko Uchi’, citing nudity, vulgarity, and the potential negative impact on children due to violent dancing styles and imitable behavior.
Both Embarambamba and Getumbe have been warned of legal consequences if they fail to comply with the demand to remove the contentious content. Similar warnings have been issued to platform operators, instructing them to take down the inappropriate material.
