Two people lost their lives in Machakos County on Thursday evening following two separate but connected accidents involving a lorry.
According to a police report seen by naihaps.com the first fatality was recorded when the driver of the lorry which was en route to Machakos from Kitui ran over a pedestrian who has since been identified as 35-year-old Dominic Musyoki Mutuku at Grogon area killing him on the spot.
The driver of the Mitsubishi lorry registration no KDD 052G was beckoned to stop by boda boda riders who witnessed the incident but he did not oblige instead attempting to flee the scene at breakneck speeds.
Irked by the driver’s decision, the boda boda operators immediately gave chase.
With the boda boda operators breathing down his neck, the lorry driver attempted to navigate through traffic only to ram into the back of a Nissan Saloon car, registration no KBN 107M, which was being driven by one Michael Mulinge.
The lorry’s driver reportedly lost control of his truck before swerving out of his lane and colliding head-on with an oncoming Mercedes Benz trailer registration no KCE 467Z.
The two trucks caught fire on impact but the driver of the Mercedes Benz trailer was able to exit his vehicle before it was completely engulfed in flames.
The Mitsubishi lorry driver was however not so lucky as he was unable to free himself from the wreckage in time burning beyond recognition inside his own vehicle.
“The unknown driver of the lorry was trapped in the cabin and burnt beyond recognition. Two stationary motorcycles near the scene were also burned alongside their riders who sustained burns on their legs,” reads the police report in part.
The two boda boda riders have since been moved to Machakos Level V hospital for treatment while the bodies of the deceased persons currently lie at the institution’s morgue.
The wreckage of the two lorries were towed to Machakos Police Station.
