Kenya Power has mandated that all Kenyans using prepaid meters must update their devices by August 31. Failing to do so will result in meters no longer accepting tokens after this deadline. This update is part of a global initiative to enhance the security of generated tokens for meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).
Kenya Power Managing Director Joseph Siror outlined the update process:
- Receiving Update Codes: Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power via SMS when they purchase new tokens. These codes must be entered into the meter following the instructions provided in the SMS before loading the new token.
- Direct Notifications: For customers who do not purchase tokens, Kenya Power will send the update codes directly to notify them of the need to update their meters.
- Loading Previous Tokens: Customers are advised to load any previously purchased tokens into their meters before entering the reset and update codes.
The update process is simple, free of charge, and will not affect any tokens that are already loaded into the meters. The initiative targets 7.4 million prepaid meters across the country.
Kenya Power assures customers that the update will not lead to any changes in the cost per unit of electricity and cautions against fraudsters posing as Kenya Power officials.
