Inspector General of Police Japhet Koomehas accused “some senior members of the society” of hiring dead bodies and blaming them on police to demoralise their services and intimidate them.
Koome argued that the leaders have been parading bodies so as to implicate police officers as being behind the killings. The IG was speaking at the National Police College Kiganjo main campus in Nyeri.
Koome further commended the Police for their actions during the anti-government protests led by Azimio la Umoja.
Koome said police upheld peace during their confrontation with protesters even as he promised action on those involved in acts of hooliganism.
Defending the police actions during the demos, Koome said that the police have a role to protect life and property.
“I want to tell Kenyans that as National Police Service, we have a role to protect life and property. We have a responsibility to ensure our country is secure and safe and it is a mandate we are going to discharge without fear or favour,” he added.
Last month, the Azimio la Umoja coalition called on the ICC to intervene in the ongoing situation in the country.
National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi had asked the ICC to take an interest in the cases of brutality emerging amid the ongoing anti-government protests.
“We have noticed an unprecedented level of police brutality on innocent Kenyans. We want the international community to take serious note of these happenings to hold into account the perpetrators of these crimes,” he said then.
“We are asking the ICC to take a keener interest in the Kenyan situation because what we are witnessing is crimes against humanity.”
