Following reports of fraud, Remotasks, an online platform offering various tasks such as copywriting, media labeling, and AI model training, has ceased operations in Kenya, leaving thousands of youth jobless.
The platform had become popular among young Kenyans seeking remote job opportunities and those looking for additional income through part-time gigs. Users were compensated in US dollars via online payment channels like PayPal on a weekly basis.
However, since Tuesday, accessing the Remotasks website from Kenya or finding work opportunities has been impossible, with all Kenyan IP accounts blocked.
Frustration among Remotasks users in Kenya has spilled onto social media, with many expressing disappointment after receiving emails notifying them of the platform’s discontinuation in the country.
The email stated: “We are reaching out with an important announcement regarding Remotasks operations in your location. We are discontinuing operations in your current location effective March 8, 2024. As part of this change, you have been off-boarded from your current project. You will receive payments associated with your work completed via the payment account set up on your profile.”
