As the news of the Supreme Court ruling reverberated across the world Kenyans In Dubai were not left behind.
In coffee houses, shops and offices, they followed the reading of the judgment online and breathes a sigh of relief when the final word came through.
Though they had their preferred candidate many were just happy that the process was now over.
“I had come on a trip courtesy of Dubai tourism when the news hit, and I was shocked just how much impact Kenyan politics has even here,” Mwalimu Rachel said.
“Kenyans and African’s from all over were following the live stream and soon after hurdled around in groups discussing about the ruling. I met a Tanzanian on the street who recognized me and he immediately congratulated me on the win of our president elect.”
The radio queen is in Dubai on a five day trip with Nollywood stars who have been accompanied by lucky winners from across Africa.
She admits that the move to involve the diaspora vote in the last elections had increased their interest in local politics. In her interactions with Kenyans living in Dubai, she noted that they are sometimes even more in tune with the politics than those back at home.
“Most people here are just happy that the election and the petition that followed went on without a hitch,” Mwalimu Rachel said. We can now get back to business, the election has however been extremely stressful for Kenyans, so maybe you should all consider joining me for a few days of relaxation.”
