The government has now banned the importation, manufacture, sale and use of Shisha in the country.
In an announcement on made on Wednesday, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said advertisement, promotion or distribution of the same is also illegal with immediate effect.
The CS noted that establishments that will be found to sell the same will be shut down.
“The importation, manufacture, sale, use, advertisement, promotion or distribution of shisha is outlawed in the country, any establishment found in breach of this provision will be shut down with immediate effect,” Kindiki said.
He directed County Security Teams to enforce the directives are adhered to, without fail.
The CS further noted that labelling and packaging of all tobacco products in the country must comply with the provisions of the Tobacco Control Act 2007 and the Tobacco Control Regulations 2014.
“Products that do not comply must be withdrawn from the market.”
The directive follows weeks of raids and arrests by NACADA on various establishments across the country on Shisha.
Four more people were Sunday arrested in an operation aimed at curbing the sale and consumption of shisha products at a popular restaurant in Nairobi.
The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) staged the operation as part of a crackdown on establishments involved in the trade of shisha.
Nacada’s Compliance and Enforcement officers acting on intelligence descended upon the restaurant in Kilimani, Nairobi where they apprehended four individuals allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of shisha products.
Among those detained were the manager, sellers, and a storekeeper linked to the establishment.
